Least-Sampled Native Bees 🐝

by Brandi Sanchez

These 58 native bees each have fewer than 50 records, making them the park’s least-sampled and the best targets for more survey effort.

Coverage tells you what each bee needs:

The iNaturalist observation icon opens an example observation.

Two ways to help. Some bees are on this list because they are hard to tell apart, not because they are scarce. When a bee can only be identified as far as its genus, it never counts toward a species, so a clear photo or a netted specimen an expert can confirm moves it off this list just as surely as finding a new one. The other way is to look somewhere new. The plants and months listed are only where people have searched so far, so different places and different times of year are worth trying.

IUCN Red List codes. NE Not Evaluated · DD Data Deficient · LC Least Concern · NT Near Threatened · VU Vulnerable · EN Endangered · CR Critically Endangered. Source: IUCN Red List API v4.

These counts pool netted specimens and every iNaturalist photo, not just formal survey records, across all years and the whole park. Source: iNaturalist photos and netted specimens, Cabrillo National Monument (data as of 2026-09-14).

Because casual public photos count too, Status shows how often a bee is noticed rather than how many there are. A showy bee near a busy trail can read as common on public photos alone, so treat rare, uncommon, and common as recording frequency rather than true density. The cut-offs are rare below 15 records, uncommon 15 to 49, and common 50 or more.
